Non Linguistic Representation
Non Linguistic Representation utilizes a lot of visual imagery, kinesthetic or whole-body modes, and auditory experiences. Concept maps, idea webs, dramatizations, computer simulations are all tools used in this type of learning. When students explain their models, they are putting their ideas into words which in turn promotes deeper thinking and better understanding.

Findings about Non Linguistic Representation
  • Learners acquire and store knowledge in two primary ways: linguistic (by reading or hearing lectures), and non linguistic (through visual imagery, etc).
  • Visual representations help sutdents recognize how topics connect.
  • Finding patterns help students organize ideas.
The video below shows a wonderful tool utilized with Think Boxes that teaches a lesson about the senses. I really like this tool for a classroom. It can also be used for students who have trouble with verbal communication.

Implementation
Non Linguistic Representation is an under used learning tool. Using this tool requires focusing on current classroom practice and looking for opportunities to engage students in multiple modes.
